Quality management for the oil and gas sector – ISO 29001
The standard NS-EN ISO 29001 Petroleum industry, petrochemical industry, and natural gas industry – Sector-specific quality management system – Requirements for product and service suppliers, is a quality management system based on ISO 9001.
ISO 29001 builds on ISO 9001 and includes additional requirements and guidance tailored to the oil and gas industry. The standard also adopts a risk-based approach to how organizations specify and implement requirements for quality management systems in the sector.
Tailored to the oil and gas sector
NS-EN ISO 29001 fully adopts NS-EN ISO 9001:2015 and provides additional requirements and guidance that are useful for the oil and gas sector:
- Implementation of the sector’s best practices with verifiable requirements and guidance to ensure the adoption of a consistent process approach (PDCA).
- Ensures that processes systematically identify organizational and specific product and service risks, assuring safety, reliability, and performance. Where risk levels are acceptable or tolerable – avoid introducing unnecessary complexity. Where a risk level is neither acceptable nor tolerable – integrate the risk management process to:
- eliminate/alter/reduce risk
- ensure relevant parties understand their responsibilities for managing risk
- allows options for risk-based assurance and verification programs. - An annex addresses conformity assessment to enable customers to select verification engagement and for organizations to identify their verification requirements for externally provided processes, products, and services. This annex includes a range of examples of matrices for individual product/service categories and contains detailed verification requirements against identified risk categories based on principles established in ISO/TR 13881:2000.
- Offers alternatives (datasheets) to minimize the need for organizations to issue specific quality requirement documents each time they contract for products and services.
- Aligns production with IOGP JIP 33 following the standardization of procurement specifications.
- Recognizes where an organization implements a customer-approved QMS for products and services covered by a complementary QMS standard that ensures compliance with a technical standard, such as "API Spec Q1 or Q2 for oilfield products and services," the complementary QMS processes are accepted as meeting the relevant requirements of NS-EN ISO 29001.
