May 17 – Norway’s Constitution Day

May 17 is Norway’s National Day, celebrating the signing of the constitution in 1814.

Unlike many countries that mark their national day with military parades, Norway celebrates with colorful children’s parades in every town and city.

Families and friends gather for festive breakfasts before heading out to participate or watch the parade. Afterwards it is very common to gather at local schools to enjoy traditional games and entertainment.

Since May 17 is a public holiday, we recommend taking this into account when planning your trip. Why not stay a few extra days and experience Norwegian National Day celebrations firsthand?
