The standard should be used by authorities, suppliers, and all actors in the value chain who benefit from comparable data and consistent terminology, regardless of the species being farmed.

Precise descriptions are essential for all trade in goods and services. Consistent terminology reduces the potential for misunderstandings and improves communication throughout the value chain.

The standard NS 9417 Salmon and rainbow trout – Harmonized terminology and methods for documentation of production was developed based on input from Seafood Norway (formerly FHL). It provides key definitions in the aquaculture chain (terminology), calculations, conversions, and describes selected methods for measurements that document production in various phases such as hatchery, juvenile (smolt) stage, grow-out, slaughter, processing, and transport. Fish feed and economics are also included in the standard.

NS 9417 forms the basis for consistent data registration across different facilities and for the use of terminology throughout the value chain.
