The standard can be applied when constructing new rearing tanks or when expanding or modifying existing facilities.

The Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries’ report “The Smolt Initiative 2007” and the Escapes Commission’s recommendation on the standardization of smolt facilities formed the basis for a Norwegian Standard for land-based production facilities.

Land-based production facilities are primarily used for smolt (juvenile fish). Escapes can result from solutions that are not adapted to the intended use or the stress to which they are exposed.
The standard NS 9416 Land-Based Aquaculture Facilities for Fish – Requirements for Risk Analysis, Planning, Execution, Operation, User Manual, and Product Datasheet reduces the risk of fish escapes, regardless of species or size.
