Two NORSOK D standards are revised and on public enquiry

NORSOK D-010 and NORSOK D-002 cover drilling and well operations on the Norwegian Continental Shelf to ensure safe and efficient operations. They are developed by the Norwegian petroleum industry to ensure adequate safety, value adding and cost effectiveness for existing and future petroleum industry developments in Norway.

NORSOK D-010 Well integrity in drilling and well operations

NORSOK D-010 defines requirements and guidelines relating to well integrity in drilling and well activities. The standard focuses on establishing well barriers by use of well barrier elements (WBEs), their acceptance criteria, their use and monitoring of integrity during their lifecycle.

The standard does not contain any well or rig equipment specifications.

Main changes

These are the main changes to the standard:

  • alignment with relevant NORSOK and international standards
  • updated principles and techniques for Plug and Abandonment
  • managed pressure drilling principles
  • well intervention requirements are now included in one clause
  • requirements to well documentation are included in a new Annex.

NORSOK D-002 Well intervention equipment

NORSOK D-002 defines requirements relevant to equipment used in well intervention operations.

The standard provides requirements for well intervention surface and downhole equipment related to design, manufacture, qualification and certification.

The standard defines requirements for equipment used for well intervention operations that are considered typical and ordinary.

New equipment, special operations, and operations in certain environments can require additional requirements and specifications which are not covered by this standard.

Main changes

These are the main changes to the standard:

  • reversed the section order for snubbing, coiled tubing and wireline to align with NORSOK D-010
  • removed content that was duplicated from NORSOK D-010 related to well control operational requirements (required elements, configuration and more) in this document
  • included clarifications on the need to account for potential differences between test sample parameters and worst-case operational parameters (e.g. yield strength for coiled tubing shearing)
  • included guidance on approach to SIL implementation
  • included reference to new API Spec 16B specific for well intervention equipment
