NORSOK Z-008 was originally developed with the oil and gas industry in mind, but the principles within can be applied to any industry, including manufacturing or processing plants, ships or maritime facilities and energy plants or installations.

The standard is designed to optimize maintenance and safety management, which in turn helps reduce operating costs. It also aims to improve the reliability of equipment and systems, which can lower the frequency of health, safety, and environmental (HSE) incidents.

Additionally, NORSOK Z-008 supports a more systematic approach to maintenance work.

Main changes

The revision has brought several updates.

Information on the work process for functional classification, regarding inheritance rules, and assigning sub functions is added.

An annex to clarify the standard's role in addressing climate change has been added, and a sub-clause has been added regarding requirements for quality assurance between the results for the consequence classification and the technical barrier element analysis.

Simplified descriptions regarding technical safety are available and maintained in other standards.
