NORSOK R-001 has been revised and these are the main changes
NORSOK R-001 specifies technical requirements for the design, manufacture, assembly, product inspection, as well as installation and testing of mechanical equipment. The standard has now been revised to ensure its relevance to the industry.
NORSOK R-001 Mechanical equipment was last published in 2017. The requirements in the standard and the relevant data sheets in Annex A, cover the mechanical requirements for the following equipment categories for an “installation” (as defined in the regulations of the Norwegian Ocean Industry Authority; Havtil):
- Pumps
- compressor
- gas turbines
- reciprocating internal combustion engines
- transmissions
- expanders
- steam turbines
- lubrication and sealing oil systems
- base frames (base plates)
- centrifuges
- cyclones
- pressure-containing equipment (including heat exchangers, etc.)
- atmospheric tanks
- electric motors and generators
The standard does not cover lifting equipment.
Main changes
These are the main changes to the standard:
- Compared with the 2017 edition, NORSOK R-001:2025 has been completely restructured.
- NORSOK R-001:2025 has been updated to reflect technological developments and has been harmonized with new revisions of national and international standards and directives, which are expected to result in simplifications and cost savings.
- Requirements for additive manufacturing and qualification in accordance with API STD 20S have been included, which is important for the quality of components manufactured using this method.
- Requirements for technology qualification in accordance with DNV-RP-A203 have been included, ensuring a systematic and traceable process.
- Requirements for vent studies for dry gas seals on centrifugal compressors have been included, providing increased safety in the event of mechanical seal failure.
- Minimum requirements for air compressors (standard equipment) have been included to improve quality.
- Requirements for low-NOx burners on gas turbines have been included, replacing the previous requirement that the equipment only be prepared for this.
- Requirements for gas turbine weatherproofing (enclosures) have been included.
- A requirement for two pilot-assisted check valves in steam turbine exhaust lines has been included to improve safety and reliability.
- NORSOK R-001:2025 now refers to ISO 21905 for exhaust systems and WHRUs.
- Datasheets are updated as relevant.
